END ADAPTER FOR ENAMEL RATERS
IS9020TMR
Enamel rate ends, caps, cones, domes and flat sheets — with titanium probes, magnetic quick-change top plates and built-in calibration resistors as standard.
From 46 mm to 153 mm, round or not: twist-off caps, rectangular and oval ends included.
The IS9020TMR is Innosen’s end adapter for enamel rating in metal packaging QA. Natively compatible with the IS810 EnamelPro™ — no adaptor cables, no reconfiguration — it measures the coating porosity of ends, caps, cones, domes and flat sheets. As a result, you find a pore, crack or scratch in the lacquer in the lab rather than as a corrosion claim months later.
Every part that meets the electrolyte resists it. Specifically, the probes are titanium, the body is a specially engineered plastic, and the top plates are magnetic and interchangeable, and therefore an operator changes end size in seconds instead of unscrewing a fixture. In addition, an integrated calibration verification switch with built-in resistors is standard, not an accessory, so the linearity of the whole measuring chain can be proven in seconds.
Finally, add the IS9023 Automatic Vacuum Control Unit and you can rate a full batch of ends without the repetitive hand movement that a manual vacuum valve demands. Meanwhile, every reading streams into IS1100 Innolytix®, so a defect found on the floor is already in the quality record.
We did not follow the standard. We set it.
Innosen has been building enamel rating equipment for metal packaging for decades. First we built the probes, then the gauges around them, and eventually the end adapter that the industry now treats as the reference came out of that work — including units that reach the market under other brand names.
So when you buy the IS9020TMR, you are buying from the people who designed it, hold the drawings, machine the parts and stock the top plates. Engineering answers, calibration guidance, spare probes and lead times come from the source rather than from a label.
Precision coating porosity measurement for metal packaging
How the end is loaded and sealed
The operator fits each end to its own custom-made magnetic top plate, which carries the seal made for that format. Vacuum comes first: it draws the end down into the adapter body and holds it there against the seal — no clamping, no screws and nothing pressing on the coating. Only then does the operator invert the pot, bringing the electrolyte into contact with the coated surface. Next, the IS810 EnamelPro™ applies an adjustable test voltage, and the current that flows gives the enamel rating. An intact lacquer film insulates almost completely, so only a very small current passes. By contrast, pores, cracks, scratches and thin spots expose bare metal and let more current through.
How a reading becomes a located defect
Reversing the polarity then makes gas bubble up at the exposed metal itself, turning a number into a located defect — usually in the score line, the rivet area or the panel radius. To run a batch, the operator loads the ends, applies vacuum and inverts the pot; the adapter does the rest.

Common Questions From Canmakers
What is the IS9020TMR end adapter?
The IS9020TMR is Innosen’s end adapter for enamel raters. Natively compatible with the IS810 EnamelPro™, it measures the coating porosity of ends, caps, cones, domes and flat sheets from 46 mm to 153 mm, using titanium probes, interchangeable magnetic top plates and an integrated calibration verification switch.
How is it different from other end adapters?
Three things. First, the wetted parts are titanium and corrosion-engineered plastic rather than standard steel. Second, the calibration verification switch and its resistors ship built in, not as an accessory. Third, changeover between end sizes is magnetic — seconds, not minutes. On top of that, Innosen supports it directly from Europe and Asia, with spare top plates held for the sizes canmakers actually run.
Features
Features
---
Titanium Probes – the contacts that sit in the electrolyte every day are titanium, not plated steel
Plastic, Stainless Steel and Titanium Throughout – no part of the adapter corrodes in a harsh enamel rating environment
Rapid-Change Magnetic Top Plates – magnets hold the plates, so end sizes swap in seconds with no screws, tools or realignment
Vacuum Loading, No Clamping – the end sits on its top plate seal and vacuum draws it into the adapter body before the pot is inverted, so nothing mechanical presses on the coating
Integrated Calibration Verification Switch – a built-in verification and linearity test, switched at the adapter, confirms the whole measuring chain in seconds
Self-Checking Automatic Contact Checking – bad contacts are the main cause of unreliable end readings, so the adapter verifies contacts during every test
Automatic Voltage Compensation – the adapter compensates the voltage drop in the cables, so the selected test voltage reaches the probe irrespective of the current

Supported formats: ends, caps, cones, domes and flat sheets
Ends and caps are the hardest parts in canmaking to enamel rate, and this is where the IS9020TMR is at its widest. In practice it covers nominal end diameters from 46 mm (113) to 153 mm (603): beverage ends and shells, food can ends, twist-off and lug caps, cones and domes, and flat sheet samples taken straight from the coater. Innosen also builds plates for rectangular and oval formats such as Hansa, Dingley and Club, and the IS9019TMR large end adapter reaches 230 mm (993) on special order. In short: one adapter, one set of magnetic top plates, and the whole end and cap programme is rateable.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does an end adapter for an enamel rater do?
An end adapter holds a can end, cap, cone, dome or flat sheet flat and leak-free while you test its internal lacquer. First, you fit the end to a top plate carrying the seal for its format. Vacuum then draws it into the adapter body and holds it there. Finally you invert the pot, so the electrolyte reaches the coated surface. Finally, the enamel rater applies a test voltage. The current that flows is the enamel rating: an intact coating insulates almost completely, whereas pores, cracks and scratches expose bare metal and let current through.
Which end sizes and shapes does the IS9020TMR cover?
Nominal end diameters from 46 mm (113) to 153 mm (603). Flat and round ends, twist-off caps, cones, domes and flat sheets are standard, and rectangular or oval formats such as Hansa, Dingley and Club are also possible. Consult Innosen for sizes outside this range — the IS9019TMR large end adapter is available as a special order and reaches 230 mm (993).
How fast is changeover between end sizes?
Seconds. The top plates are magnetic and interchangeable, so an operator lifts one plate off and drops the next one on — no screws, no tools and no realignment. The IS9031 Top Plate Rack keeps the set organized at the bench so the right plate is always to hand.
Are the calibration resistors included or an accessory?
Included. The IS9020TMR has an integrated calibration verification switch with built-in resistors as standard, so the verification and linearity test can be run at any time without ordering a separate calibrated resistor. Annual calibration of the IS810 EnamelPro™ itself takes place on site.
Why titanium probes and engineered plastic?
Because electrolyte is corrosive and end adapters live in it. Titanium probes and a specially engineered plastic body resist that attack, which keeps contact resistance stable over time. A corroded probe does not fail loudly — it quietly drifts, and drifting readings are worse than no readings.
Can vacuum be automated for high-volume testing?
Yes. The IS9021 Vacuum Generator supplies vacuum with an integrated filter, water separator and easy air-pressure adjustment, and the optional IS9023 Automatic Vacuum Control Unit applies and releases it automatically. For laboratories rating hundreds of ends per shift, this speeds up testing and removes the repetitive hand movement associated with RSI.
Which enamel rater does the IS9020TMR work with?
The IS810 EnamelPro™. The adapter is part of Innosen’s enamel rating line, which also covers cans, tubes, capsules, foils, drums and the rivet area of easy-open ends, and every reading can be logged in real time to IS1100 Innolytix®.
Can one gauge serve two different adapters?
Yes, with the optional IS228B Enamel Rater Switchbox. It connects between the gauge and the adapters, and a knob selects between A and B. A laboratory that rates both ends and cans, for example, can leave an IS9020TMR end adapter and an IS9015 can stand permanently connected to one gauge and switch between them, instead of unplugging and reconnecting each time. The switchbox works with the IS9015, IS9015XXL, IS9017, IS9018, IS9020, IS9025 and IS9030 adapters.
