Coating Thickness Gauge

IS860 CoatPro ™

The IS860 CoatPro is the next-generation coating thickness gauge for canmaking — faster readings, tighter tolerances, and less lacquer in the bin.

Advanced data visualization with our coating thickness gauge. Real-time heat maps. Modern software integration.

The IS860 CoatPro is Innosen’s capacitance-based coating thickness gauge for metal packaging QA.  It measures lacquer film weight on flat sheets, formed cans, aluminium collapsible tubes and aerosols using interchangeable probes. Annual calibration is performed onsite with an automatic calibration box, and every reading logs in real time to IS1100 Innolytix® data management software.

Every gram of over-applied lacquer is margin lost — yet when coating thickness measurements are inconsistent, canmakers compensate by over-applying lacquer to stay within specification, driving up material costs, cure-oven load, and waste.

The IS860 CoatPro addresses this directly: operating as a highly accurate capacitance comparator, the system uses the dielectric properties of the coating layer to measure capacitances and translates them into precise film weight readings. As a result, process windows can be set on measurement rather than margin. Quick, reliable readings right on the factory floor mean test frequencies can be increased at no extra cost.

This isn’t an incremental upgrade — it’s the new standard.

How it works

The gauge measures coating thickness by detecting the capacitance between the probe tip and the metal substrate beneath the lacquer. Before use, it is calibrated against a sample with a known coating of the same lacquer type. Because capacitance changes only with the distance between probe and metal — the lacquer thickness — each reading directly reflects the coating thickness at that point. Results are typically expressed as a film weight, using the known sample as the unit of reference.

COMMON QUESTIONS FROM CANMAKING QA TEAMS

What is the IS860 CoatPro coating thickness gauge?

The IS860 CoatPro is Innosen’s capacitance-based coating thickness gauge for metal packaging QA. It measures lacquer film weight on flat sheets, formed cans, aluminium collapsible tubes, and aerosols, using a range of interchangeable probes.

How accurate is the IS860 CoatPro?

The IS860 CoatPro measures with linearity better than 1%, subject to probe and sample stability. Reference samples are checked against Innosen’s automatic calibration box rather than left to age, which keeps that accuracy consistent between calibration cycles.

What's the difference between film weight and coating thickness?

The IS860 measures coating thickness by detecting the capacitance between the probe tip and the metal substrate beneath the lacquer. Because capacitance changes only with that distance, each reading directly reflects the thickness at that point. Results are expressed as a film weight, calibrated against a known sample — the industry also refers to this measurement as dry film thickness (DFT).

Which probes are compatible with the IS860 CoatPro?

The IS860 works with Innosen’s full probe range: the Hoverprobe® II IS9651 for flat sheets, the Tube Probe IS9561 for aluminium collapsible tubes, and the Aerosol Probe IS9571 for formed cans and aerosols.

How often does the IS860 need to be calibrated?

Calibration is performed onsite, annually, using Innosen’s automatic calibration box. There’s no return shipment and no waiting on a service visit.

Can the IS860 run more than one probe at a time?

Yes. The IS228C Switchbox lets a single IS860 gauge run two probes, so one unit can cover more than one measurement point or substrate type without switching hardware.

Does the IS860 integrate with quality management software?

Yes. Every reading logs in real time to IS1100 Innolytix®, Innosen’s data management software, for analysis, reporting, and traceability — with up to 100,000 readings stored on the gauge itself as a buffer.
