MISSING SIDE SEAM LACQUER DETECTOR

IS670

External Side Seam Lacquer Inspection for 3-Piece Cans

Detect completely missing side seam lacquer and non-lacquered gaps before affected cans proceed further through the production line.

The Innosen IS670 is a self-calibrating production-line sensor developed to inspect the external side seam stripe of 3-piece welded can bodies.

It detects a completely missing lacquer stripe or an incomplete, non-lacquered gap and provides a reject signal when a defect is identified. Installed after the side seam lacquering station or before curing, the IS670 helps canmakers identify insufficient seam protection earlier in the process.

Common Questions From Canmakers

Why Inspect External Side Seam Lacquer?

The external side seam stripe helps protect the welded seam against corrosion. When the stripe is completely missing or contains an uncoated gap, part of the seam may remain unprotected.

Undetected side seam lacquer defects can increase the risk of:

  • Corrosion along the welded seam
  • Can leakage
  • Production spoilage
  • Additional inspection or containment
  • Customer complaints
  • Damage to product and brand reputation

The IS670 provides automatic production-line inspection so that affected can bodies can be identified and rejected before they continue further through the process.

Where Should the IS670 Be Installed?

The IS670 should be installed after the external side seam lacquer has been applied and before the curing stage.

At this position, the sensor can inspect the lacquer stripe and identify missing coverage before the can body continues further through production.

The exact mounting position depends on:

  • Can body dimensions
  • Side seam stripe width
  • Available installation space
  • Production-line arrangement
  • PLC and rejection-system requirements

Innosen can review the line layout and recommend the appropriate sensor position and signal configuration.

How Our Missing Side Seam Lacquer Detector Works

1. Monitors the External Side Stripe

The sensor monitors the lacquer stripe applied over the external welded side seam as each can body passes the inspection point.

2. Detects Missing Coverage

The IS670 identifies completely missing side seam lacquer and incomplete or non-lacquered gaps within the stripe.

3. Sends a Reject Signal

When missing lacquer is detected, the sensor provides a reject signal for integration with the line’s rejection or control system.

4. Confirms Sensor Operation

A heartbeat signal allows the control system to verify that the sensor remains operational.

The sensor recalibrates automatically and does not require a separate controller.

What Side Seam Lacquer Defects Can the IS670 Detect?

The IS670 Missing Side Seam Lacquer Detector is designed to detect:

  • A completely missing external side seam lacquer stripe
  • Incomplete lacquer coverage
  • Non-lacquered gaps within the side stripe

When a defect is identified, the sensor provides a reject signal for integration with the production line’s control or rejection system.

The IS670 is suitable for transparent and colored side seam lacquers. The specific lacquer, stripe width, can format, and line conditions should be reviewed during application assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Does the Missing Side Seam Lacquer Detector Work?

  • The detector monitors the lacquer stripe applied over the external welded seam. When it identifies missing or incomplete coverage, it provides a reject signal for integration with the production line’s control or rejection system.

Does the IS670 Require a Separate Controller?

  • No. The sensor recalibrates automatically and does not require a separate controller.

What Type of Output Signal Does the IS670 Provide?

  • The IS670 provides a reject signal when missing or incomplete lacquer is detected, plus a heartbeat signal confirming the sensor is operational. Output pulse width is configurable (45 ms default).

Can the IS670 Detect Both Transparent and Colored Side Seam Lacquers?

  • Yes, the IS670 is suitable for both transparent and colored side seam lacquers.

What Is the Difference Between the IS670 and the IS651?

  • The IS670 inspects the external side seam stripe on 3-piece welded can bodies. The IS651 inspects lacquer coverage on coated sheets before they’re formed into can bodies. They protect against lacquer defects at different production stages.

Can the IS670 Detect Twin-Welded Can Bodies?

  • Yes. Detection of twin-welded can bodies is included as standard on every IS670.
