On-line Sheet Length Measurement System

IS1261

The Innosen IS1261 On-line Sheet Length Measurement System measures the length of every cut sheet directly on the coil cutting line, to ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) at up to 9,000 sheets per hour (150 m/min). It compares each sheet with user-set limits and warns the moment sheet length drifts outside the allowed tolerance, so the operator can reject the sheet or stop the line.

A short sheet does not stay a cutting-line problem. It travels on to the body welder, where it causes weld overlap and variations in can size, and to end making, where it shows up as clipped curls. The IS1261 catches it at the shears, before it becomes scrap further down the line.

How it works

The IS1261 is used straight on the cutting line. Each cut sheet passes through two U-shaped heads — a trigger head and a camera head — connected to a controller with an LCD display beside the line. The controller’s microprocessor calculates the length of the sheet, displays it and compares it with the limits the user has set. Values for average and standard deviation are logged, giving a running picture of how well the line is holding length. If a sheet falls outside the set limits, the operator can reject the sheet or stop the line.

Engineered for the cutting line.

Every detail of the IS1261 serves one job: stopping out-of-length sheets at the shears, before they reach the welder or the end press.

Accurate to ±0.1 mm.

Sheet length measured to ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) in the center at the focus point, across a ±5 mm (±0.2″) measurement range.

Keeps pace with the line.

Rated for 150 m/min and 9,000 sheets per hour — measurement on the running line, not on sheets pulled from the stack.

Your limits, your call.

User-definable reject levels within ±3 mm (±0.1″). Out-of-length sheets can be rejected or the line stopped.

Statistics as it runs.

Average and standard deviation of sheet length are logged, and every result is shown on the controller’s LCD display.

Built for the line.

IP54-rated heads and controller on a 24 VDC supply, with single or automatic calibration.

Connects outward.

RS232 output from the controller for passing measurement data on.

Common Questions From Canmakers

What is on-line sheet length measurement?

It is measuring the length of each sheet as it is cut, on the cutting line itself, instead of checking sheets off the stack after the fact. The IS1261 calculates the length of every sheet that passes through its heads, compares it with user-set limits and flags any sheet that falls outside them while the line is still running.

Why does sheet length matter for 3-piece cans and ends?

Sheet length is the dimension every downstream process inherits. A short sheet can cause weld overlap and variations in can size in body making, and clipped curls in end making. Each out-of-length sheet that gets past the shears either becomes scrap later or turns into a defect on the finished can or end.

Measuring length at the cutting line moves the check to the one place the problem can be fixed at source.

How accurate is the IS1261?

Accuracy is ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) in the center at the focus point. The measurement range is ±5 mm (±0.2″), and user-definable reject levels can be set within ±3 mm (±0.1″).

The vertical inspection range is −0/+25 mm (−0/+1″) on the center position, 25 mm (1″) up from the lower window.

Where is the IS1261 installed?

Directly on the cutting line. The IS1261 is designed for cutting lines and is used straight on the line: each cut sheet passes through the U-shaped trigger head and the U-shaped camera head, and the controller with its LCD display sits where the operator can see it.

What does the operator see and do?

The controller shows the calculated length of each sheet on its LCD display and compares it with the limits the user has set. When a sheet falls outside those limits, the operator can either reject the sheet or stop the line — the decision stays with the people running it.

What does the controller record?

Alongside the live reading, the IS1261 logs values for the average and standard deviation of sheet length. That turns a pass/fail check into a picture of how consistently the line is cutting, and the RS232 output makes the data available beyond the controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IS1261 On-line Sheet Length Measurement System?

It is Innosen’s on-line system for measuring the length of every cut sheet directly on a coil cutting line. Sheets pass through a U-shaped trigger head and a U-shaped camera head; the controller calculates each sheet’s length to ±0.1 mm (±0.004″), shows it on its LCD display and compares it with user-set limits, so an out-of-length sheet can be rejected or the line stopped.

What problems does a short sheet cause downstream?

A short sheet can cause weld overlap and variations in can size in 3-piece body making, and clipped curls in the end-making process. Out-of-length sheets also end up as scrap. Measuring length on the cutting line stops them at source, before they reach the welder or the end press.

How accurate is the IS1261?

Accuracy is ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) in the center at the focus point. The measurement range is ±5 mm (±0.2″), and user-definable reject levels can be set within ±3 mm (±0.1″).

What happens when a sheet is out of tolerance?

The controller compares every calculated sheet length with the limits the user has set. When a sheet falls outside them, the operator can either reject the sheet or stop the line. The controller also logs the average and standard deviation of sheet length, and provides an RS232 output.

How fast a cutting line can the IS1261 keep up with?

The IS1261 is rated for line speeds of 150 m/min and 9,000 sheets per hour — 150 sheets a minute — so it measures on the running line rather than on sheets pulled from the stack afterwards.

What does the IS1261 system consist of?

Three components: a U-shaped camera head, a U-shaped trigger head and a controller with LCD display. The head measures 319 × 42 × 245 mm (12.5 × 1.65 × 9.6″) and the controller 143 × 66 × 71 mm (5.6 × 2.6 × 2.8″). The system runs on a 24 VDC supply, is rated IP54, and supports single or automatic calibration.

How is the IS1261 different from the IS1270 MK II Coil Translation Measurement System?

Both work on the coil cutting line, but they measure different axes. The IS1261 measures the length of each cut sheet — along the line. The IS1270 MK II measures sideways movement of the coil — across the line — which misplaces scroll edges. Used together, they put both sheet length and lateral position under measurement.
