Sheet Translation Measurement System
IS430 MK II
The Innosen IS430 MK II Sheet Translation Measurement System detects sheets that move sideways or “translate” as they pass through the coater on 3-piece canmaking lines.
When sheets miss the side guide and move outside the acceptable position, coating placement can become incorrect. This can lead to weld wire breakage, damaged weld rollers, poor weld quality, spoilage, downtime, and customer complaints.
The IS430 MK II works as an add-on module to the IS416 Sheet Skew Measurement System, providing additional protection against sheet alignment problems caused by lateral movement.
Common Questions From Canmakers
Why does sheet translation affect canmaking quality?
During 3-piece canmaking, sheets must enter the coater in the correct position to ensure lacquer is applied accurately.
If a sheet moves sideways and misses the side guide, the coating margin can shift from its intended location. When this misaligned coating reaches welding, it can contaminate the weld area and cause:
- Weld wire breakage
- Poor weld quality
- Weld roller damage
- Production downtime
- Increased scrap
The IS430 MK II detects this sideways movement before it creates downstream problems.
How can sheet translation measurement improve process capability?
The IS430 MK II does not only detect out-of-position sheets. It also provides statistical data that helps canmakers understand process behaviour.
The system provides data such as:
- Average sheet translation
- Standard deviation
- Process variation
This allows production teams to identify trends, monitor stability, and improve coating line performance.
How does the IS430 detect translated sheets?
The IS430 MK II monitors sheet position at the coater discharge.
Operators define the acceptable range of sideways movement. If a sheet moves beyond this tolerance, the system immediately provides feedback to the production line.
This allows operators to identify alignment problems early instead of discovering them after welding problems occur.
How does the IS430 work with the IS416 Sheet Skew Measurement System?
Sheet alignment problems can happen in different ways.
A sheet can:
- Rotate (skew)
- Move sideways (translation)
- Arrive early or late (registration)
The IS430 MK II adds translation measurement capability to the IS416 Sheet Skew Measurement System, creating a more complete solution for sheet positioning control at the coater.

IS228A Sheet Positioning Measurement SwitchboxThe IS228A is a switchbox for the IS430 MK II Sheet Translation Measurement System, that allows the users to connect two different IS430 MK II heads to the same electronics unit. The switch is connected between the controller and the IS430 MK II heads. It allows the operators to choose which sheet positioning measurement should be used, just by switching the knob from L to R. With the use of this switchbox, one controller can accommodate two different sheet translation measurement heads without connecting and disconnecting its cables to the controller. This is convenient on production lines when the fixed outer margin often changes side as for optimum precision the IS430 MK II must always inspect the fixed outer margin. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the IS430 MK II Sheet Translation Measurement System?
- The IS430 MK II is an Innosen sheet translation detector designed to detect sideways movement of sheets at the coater on 3-piece canmaking lines.
What does sheet translation mean?
- Sheet translation means a sheet has moved sideways from its intended position while passing through the coater.
What problems can translated sheets cause?
- Translated sheets can cause poor coating placement, weld wire breakage, weld roller damage, poor weld quality, spoilage, and downtime.
Where is the IS430 MK II installed?
- The IS430 MK II is installed at the discharge conveyor of the coater, mounted on the fixed outer margin side.
How is the IS430 different from the IS416?
- The IS416 detects sheet rotation or skew, while the IS430 detects sideways sheet movement or translation.
Can the IS430 work with the IS416?
- Yes. The IS430 MK II is designed as an add-on module to the IS416 Sheet Skew Measurement System.
